Republican, The (Springfield, MA) - Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Deceased Name: Zilpha Thompson 1915 - 2007 PITTSFIELD - Zilpha ''Sis'' Thompson, 91, formerly of 261 Narragansett Avenue, died Saturday, June 9th at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided at Sugar Hill in Dalton for the past three years. Born on November 18, 1915 in Pittsfield, she was the daughter of Rudson and Sarah Barnes Bellinger. She was educated in Dalton schools and a 1933 graduate of the former Dalton High School. Mrs. Thompson went on to graduate from Green Mountain College in 1935 and the University of Michigan in 1937 with a degree in Sociology and Psychology. Mrs. Thompson was a social worker for 19 years with the Welfare Department working in Pittsfield, Dalton and Lanesboro. She was a Police Matron for five years, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dalton, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She was active with the Campfire group in Dalton for many years and a councilor at the Dalton summer camp. She was renowned for her hatpin collection and lectured frequently about the subject. She was very skilled at needlepoint and her Berkshire Heritage work was exhibited at the Berkshire Museum. Mrs. Thompson married Orlo L. Thompson on November 18, 1939. He predeceased her on October 1, 1983. She leaves behind two sons, Orlo S. Thompson of Groton, MA and Jeffrey B. Thompson of Pittsfield, MA; a daughter Zilpha L. Murray of Springfield, MA, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Mrs. Zilpha M. Thompson, will be held on Saturday, June 23rd at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Dalton, with the Rev. Robert Jackson officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of Dalton: Roof Restoration Fund, in care of Bartlett-Wellington Funeral Home 525 Main Street, Dalton, MA 01226, who is in charge of arrangements.Mrs. Thompson was an avid Red Sox fan and a lover of Pontoosuc Lake where she spent countless hours year round. She was also a worldwide traveler visiting all fifty states and abroad with her traveling partner, Leonard Swift. She described herself as ''the happy camper.'' Mrs. Thompson was predeceased by her four brothers: Norman Bellinger, Richard Bellinger, Rudson Bellinger, and Michael Ringanese. She is also survived by a son-in-law , Ross Murray, two daugthers-in-law Bobbi Thompson and Jean Thompson; her eight grandchildren: Michael Murray, Ross Murray, Robert Murray, Debi Thompson, Stephanie Seely, Shauna Roberts, Stephen Thompson, and Laurie Keatts. ''Sis'' was very grateful and appreciative for her friends at Sugar Hill.
